so, Mat Staver, who would Jesus lynch?

It came to my attention recently that a group called The Liberty Council – associated with Liberty University – has objected to the passage in The Senate of the Anti-Lynching bill, The Justice for Victims of Lynching Act.

https://www.nbcnews.com/feature/nbc-out/evangelical-group-wants-gays-removed-anti-lynching-bill-n956831

As the article states, the bill applies to lynchings motivated by “the victim’s actual or perceived religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability.”

Liberty Council chairman, Mat Staver, wanted the “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” language removed from bill, considering it a “way in” for future legislation to further protect the LGBTQ community.

When I went to The Liberty Council’s website to learn more about their organization, I found this post entitled, “False Reporting on Lynching Bill Endangers Lives” that was posted on January 10th, the day after the NBC News article:

https://www.lc.org/newsroom/details/011019-false-reporting-on-lynching-bill-endangers-lives

In it, Staver claims the article stated he was “opposed to banning lynching.” It didn’t. He also states that he “opposes lynching across the board!” That isn’t the issue. He further reported death threats having been left for their staff – and that is regrettable, seriously. Also, I imagine he is mortified at being targeted right now. Hmmm.

Oh, and they trotted out an African American staff member to feature in the post. And pointed it out. Really. Just WOW.

Still, he is not, he CANNOT be, so dense that he does not understand the difference between lynching already being illegal as murder at the state level, of course, but also giving it additional penalties for groups that are known to be targeted, as a hate crime.

He knows this. Of course he does. He is an attorney and the former Dean of the Liberty University School of Law. So, at least when it comes to this particular situation, to quote the good CJ Craig, he’s stupid, but he’s not stupid, you see?

It’s just that the words that he said to a conservative online site – the nasty ones that would have been just fine with that audience, but not in the mainstream, the site that now is mysteriously not working? – they came to light. And, lo and behold, he is feeling maligned. Hmmm.

Anyway. I’m not buying.

Back to the initial issue.

When he did, in fact, call for the removal of the “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” language from the Anti-Lynching Bill, what he was saying, as The Liberty Council calls itself a Christian organization, is that he, as chairman, believes that it is the Christian thing to do to remove this people group from this hate crimes bill. . .

In 2017 (the year in which the most recent statistics are available), the FBI reported a 17% increase overall in hate crimes. 17%.

There were 7,175.

Of those, 1, 130 were related to sexual orientation.

106 were transgender people.

29 transgender people were MURDERED.

These are evil acts. Pure evil.

Hate crimes in a group that is increasingly being horrifically targeted.

So, to a regular, moral human, it would seem that ANY protection we could offer would be a good good thing.

And what are the words of the Gospels as to how to treat others?

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and and with all your soul and with all your strength and with mind; and love your neighbor as yourself. – Luke 10:27.

He will reply, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.” – Matthew 25:40 – 45.

Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God, but if we love one another, God lives in us and His love is made complete in us. – John 4:11-12

And a reportedly Christian non-profit is trying to remove a targeted people group from a Federal Hate Crimes Bill?

NO.

HELL NO.

And why IS this a non-profit, with a clearly political agenda? It certainly isn’t a church. And it is seeking to affect legislative agenda. Just wondering.

My next thought was that this group definitely needed to be added to the religious extremist list.

When I went to suggest them however, I was comforted to discover they are already there:

(and, for the love, y’all, please read the above link.)

After all of the Southern Poverty Law Center’s information on this group, this absolute hate group, acting in the name of Jesus, I am just sick.

It’s truly breathtaking.

And to Mat Staver directly?

I truly don’t know what in the holy hell is wrong with you. I really don’t. But it is TIME to get right, my friend.

Read some books. Go to therapy. Go on an extended retreat. Travel to India. Pray. Pray. Pray. Meditate. Have some ECT. Explore your past lives. Drive to Colorado and try the Medical MJ. Reread your Bible cover to cover four times. Sit under the Bodhi tree for seven weeks. Learn to pray the Rosary. Take up Kundalini. . . Eat. Pray. Love.

DO WHATEVER YOU NEED TO DO.

Just get rid of this ugly – because it is not Jesus.

Or don’t.

But if you don’t, there are lots of us here to say a loud “HELL NO” and to stand up for ALL of the people groups who are victimized by hate crimes.

We can and we will.

It is the decent human way.

Be well, everybody.

Grace and Blessings.
