Y’all, I honestly don’t have words for what is happening this week in America. I am saddened, disappointed, frightened, and ever so freaking angry.
The witch hunts are escalating – and, yesterday, Jimmy Kimmel was taken off the air for displeasing the Orange One.
Even South Park delayed airing – which they *never* do – so they must be running scared and making changes.
(While I don’t watch South Park, I will go to the mat on their – and everyone else’s – absolute right to speak and create freely.)
This is surreal.
There is much to say and I’m sure I will be writing about this soon – but right now my thoughts are all over the place.
Today, instead, I want to share something sacred I think we all need right now, a prayer from Saint Thomas More that I came across in a book I’m reading this afternoon.
The prayer, St. Thomas’s “Prayer for Good Humor,” could not be more needed in this moment – when I know I’m not the only one who feels like they are crumpling under the weight of this awfulness.
In the midst of it all, we do not want to give in to hate and bitterness – because we certainly do not want to resemble those responsible for all of this in any way. We must keep our good humor and hold on to our light in the face of their darkness.
To that end, today, I feel that having found this prayer was no accident and I hope it helps your heart too.
Prayer for Good Humor
Grant me oh Lord, good digestion,
and also something to digest.
Grant me a healthy body, and the necessary good humor to maintain it.
Grant me a simple soul that knows to treasure all that is good
and that doesn’t frighten easily at the sight of evil,
but rather finds the means to put things
back in their place.
Give me a soul that knows not
boredom,
grumbles, sighs, and laments,
nor excess of stress, because of that obstructing thing called “I.”
Grant me O Lord, a good sense of humor,
Allow me the grace to be able to take a joke
to discover in life a bit of joy,
and to be able to share it with others.
– Saint Thomas More

Be well, everybody. Take care of yourselves and each other.
Grace and Blessings.
