Dear New York, This Is Insanity. . .

Wow. Just wow.

New York, you have really outdone yourselves.

A couple of days ago, when I saw news on my Facebook feed of your new abortion law, the initial post was from a conservative site, so I honestly thought that the case for what this law was perhaps had been spun somehow.

So I went in search of more information – only to discover that it had maybe been misworded a bit- but that was about the extent of it.

The jist of it was truly as horrific as the article I had initially read.

Your new abortion law is NOTHING to celebrate. Or cheer about on your Senate floor. Or light up One World Trade Center pink over.

the evening of the new law’s passage.

And here is why. . .

First of all, before I even address the primary issue I have with this law, the fact of the matter is that you would not designate other surgical procedures to physicians assistants, midwives, and nurse practitioners unsupervised. This already has rendered women’s healthcare less safe, not more.

BUT, the primary issue is this: The claim being made is that this new law was necessary because abortion is needed after 24 weeks when a woman’s life or health is in danger. And that is not remotely true.

When a mother’s life is in danger after 24 weeks, depending on the circumstances, the obstetrician taking care of her will be considering whether it is safest to induce labor or perform a cesarean section and immediately take action to save both mother and baby (if, hopefully, the baby is still alive). Also, it stands to reason that a mother whose health is in a precarious situation belongs in a hospital setting and NOT in a clinic, for her safety and well-being, in the first place.

After delivery, of course, the premature baby will be sent to the NICU right away. After that, if the mother feels unable for any reason to care for the baby, she then has other options to consider – and there are MANY families willing to adopt the baby.

I have no doubt that everyone who passed this law is also aware of this – so I really don’t understand all of the celebration.

I believe with all of my heart that most reasonable people – regardless of how they feel about first trimester abortion – are taken aback by this.

And the people who are actually celebrating such a brutish law?

I don’t even know what to say or think.

24 week NICU premie.

I truly don’t understand how a state just recklessly disregards viability, person-hood really.

How do you sleep at night, New York officials?

Seriously, how?

This is just shameful.
