happy music monday – one hit wonder style.

Well, y’all, as you can see, yesterday was “One Hit Wonder Day” it seems.

Unfortunately, your girl was in the land of mathematics and tears all day so we had to just let that thought go until today.

However, today is Music Monday – and I’ll be spending it doing some schoolwork and resting this still uncooperative body of mine – and we shall enjoy an oddball playlist I say. πŸ˜‰

As usual, having sorted through a crazy number of one hit wonder info from here, there, and everywhere, I have a full playlist that I will place at the bottom of this post as well as a Spotify link.

First, though, I want to share a few songs that have caught my eye as one hit wonders for different reasons – some because I actually dig the song and had forgotten it, some because they remind me of a specific time, some are part of a show or film I love.

This has been a fun trip down memory lane. ❀

I’m going to start with Alannah Myles’ Black Velvet simply because I’ve always liked it and hadn’t heard it in forever until I was reminded of it today. I had it on cassette once upon a time and it was one of my favorites around 1990. ❀

Next up, reminding many of us of our misspent youth, is Seven Mary Three’s Cumbersome. πŸ˜‰

This one is definitely NOT because it is a piece of musical genius – rather it’s because I associate it with one of my very favorite movies since I was young, Benny and Joon.

I really smiled when I saw this on one of the lists – because, of course, it’s his only hit. He was an actor, not a singer. Oh, the memories of this movie (and him too). ❀

This oddball also made me smile as I remember it well and fondly – and I love, love, love his movies now.

Technically this was her one big hit – but she’s been making fantastic music for many years and I think she’s fabulous:

This is just. . . necessary. . .Β  Is there anyone over 40 who can’t call Jenny if they need to? πŸ™‚

This song ATE an entire summer on MTV. . .

Oh my word. I completely forgot this song and show until the list appeared. Yasss. πŸ˜‰

This is another one that is 100% NOT because it’s a good song – it is a tragic earworm – but it – and specifically how bad it is – is a big important part of the first episode of a show my better half and I love so I must include it.

In the same tragic vein, we love The West Wing, and in a favorite episode, CJ is running around singing this travesty of a song. . . πŸ™‚

Now that we’ve all suffered enough, I’ll share that I was surprised to see this really good one. As it is such a beautiful song, I actually thought Marc Cohn had more songs on the charts.

And, last for the video part of this post (the playlist is a good bit longer) – this really made me laugh.

Y’all, The Grateful Dead appears on several “One Hit Wonder” lists – because, technically they are. Their only charted hit was Touch of Grey in 1987.

I’m dying. πŸ™‚

Before I post the playlist, I also want to share this article I came across with their take on the 56 Worst One-Hit Wonders of All Time. Of note, the only intersection between songs on their list and songs I actually have shared as ones that I like is Joan Osborne’s One of Us. They don’t like it; I ❀ Joan forever. Otherwise, we are pretty much together on these.

56 Worst One-Hit Wonders Article.

For my entire list, as I mentioned before, there are a few musical catastrophes – πŸ™‚ – but many great songs that I hadn’t heard in a long time. This was a super fun project.

Here is the Spotify link with the full playlist below. πŸ™‚

Happy listening, y’all. ❀
