He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing. And you are to love those who are foreigners, for you yourselves were foreigners in Egypt. – Deuteronomy 10:18-19 (NIV)
Last night while I was talking to my husband, I got the devastating breaking news update from the New York Times that a tractor trailer in San Antonio had been discovered with at least 40 people inside it who had already died and others who were seriously ill.
Today the number who have died has risen to 50 and 16 more people are hospitalized.
There is plenty of finger pointing about immigration policy and who is blame for this tragedy – and that can all be sorted, there is plenty of blame to go around – but right now the horror of what has happened to these people desperate to find a way into this country just undoes me.
That there are human traffickers treating people in this manner – crammed into an unairconditioned truck with no water in 103 degree heat – is unthinkable and yet it is happening daily.
This has to stop. This just cannot be.
It’s hard to conceive of a tragedy on this scale. Pray for these victims and their loved ones as well as the responders to this awful scene.
Remember, too, this was reported because someone heard a cry for help.
As always, if you see something, say something.
Be well, everybody. Take care of yourselves and each other.
Grace and Blessings.
just stunning. my heart. ❤
